Sedentary No More!

Yesterday I took a Dexa Scan test at Kaiser [link]. This is a test to measure bone density. Apparently I have bone loss. Osteoporosis! My T-score is -2.9, which is not good!

Now Kaiser has me on a medication called, "Alendronate". Also, Calcium and Vitamin D supplements. But the biggest suggested change by Kaiser, is to get up off my butt and walk! So, I went for a walk this morning. And I am going on another walk this evening.  One hour's worth of walking every day. About 5,000 steps.

Since I tend to over-do things, and also tend to be very habitual, I am guessing that if I do this active life-style change for awhile, that I should wind up walking for a whole hour each morning and each evening.

Got to eat better too! Can't miss breakfast which includes milk, yogurt and orange juice.

My Guava Gardens apartment...
...is filling up. A couple of days ago arrived a 2-drawer bedside cabinet and the "volleyball" chair. Yesterday FedEX delivered the 3-drawer office cabinet that I bought from Amazon. It is amazing how much stuff that was a scattered mess on the kitchen counter, is now neatly stored in this office cabinet. The bottom drawer of this office cabinet is for my hanging file folders.

Desk
A desk is coming today too! It's called "Typhoon Desk" and is colored white. Has a glass top. Inexpensive too...$130. With this desk comes a neat LED lamp - with 5 stages of brightness. The lamp is black.

TV
This morning from Best Buy, comes my 50" Samsung TV! The TV will sit on a metal and glass stand. All of this TV stuff is being delivered, set-up and installed by what Best Buy calls, "The Geek Squad". All that I have to do with setting up this TV is to direct the operation!

Already delivered and working is the Cox Communications cable box which controls the TV signal. A really fancy Wireless Modem is already connected up to the Cox cable broadcasting WiFi all over the apartment. Really fast WiFi too. 350GB of data per month!

  6. Sounds like you are having a great time setting the apartment up George. Walking is the best exercise you can get. Find different interesting routes and give yourself a small reward for doing the walk. Find a juice bar a half hour walk away and buy yourself a small reward for walking there. That way it will not be, :I have to go for my walk", but rather, "I am going to walk to the juice bar for a carrot juice".

  7. I too was losing bone density so doc suggested I do weight baring exercise...so I walked a lot. I'd park my car far away from entrance of anyplace I went and walked, also hiked a lot, lifted weights 6 lbs w/knee sqats and upper arm excercise. Went back for my yearly test and guess what! I had built up bone density to normal levels!! I never was put on medication but my doc threaten if no improvement had to go on medication. So, walk a lot George and you will build those bones back up.

  8. Oooh, George, I am so happy I found you again. I have wondered where you are and what you are doing and was fearing for the worst. Believe me, what you really have been through was not as bad as what I was fearing. I feel like you are my big brother! Keep on posting and I will feel overjoyed. I am glad that you are finding a spot for yourself.

  15. How about XM radio? Maybe your radio from your RV could be salvaged and you could enjoy it again. I love mine.

    1. By the time George made it to the hospital that day his RV was probably stripped nekked. Anytime you have a problem and a tow truck has to pick up your car, truck, rv, etc take everything out of it you want because it won't be there when you go for it.

  16. Things are looking really good, George. I like the soccer ball chair!

I walk a lot, too, but don't always enjoy it. My dog, Katie, gets me out three times a day, and once I'm walking with her, I try to walk longer. I have an MP3 player and belong to the San Diego Library. I download audio books from the library and transfer them to my MP3 player. It's a lot easier to walk longer when I'm listening to a book on tape. Just a suggestion if you get tired of just walking. :)

  17. George, I have been following your blog for many years. Wow what a guy you are! I have been through bypass surgery 6 years ago, and recently (six mos. ago) had my valve replaced with a mechanical one. God has blessed us both with a new life. I'm feeling great now!
Enjoy your new beginning. My prayers are for you.
