Antigua day

I am packing up to leave Guatemala City. The mini-bus shuttle is scheduled for an 11am pickup at Hotel Carillon.

Remember yesterday when I wrote that the shuttle fare was only $1.95US? Well, that was not quite right. Apparently I did not understand that a "$" sign in front of an amount indicates priced in US dollars. Not the Guatemala Quetzal. So, my fare, door-to-door is $16.05US. Actually, not a bad price for an hour trip!

Hostel La Quinta
1pm - I am right now in my room. This is the tiniest hotel room that I have ever experienced. I am able to touch the opposite walls with my fingers!

But really, who needs more space than this? The Birdman of Alcatraz had a room this size [But he did not have the key to the door].

I will learn tonite how this hostel type accommodation is for sleeping.

Lost in Antigua!
2pm - My decision was to wander around Antigua, just for a look-see. Not looking for an adventure. In fact, adventure did not even cross my mind.

However, sometimes when I least expect it, adventure comes looking for me! I'd been walking for a couple of hours when I decided to turn back to Hostel La Quinta. That was when I realized that I had no idea where I was right now! Not only that, but I was not able to remember the name of my hotel. God! I hate it when my memory conks out!

Remarkably, I did recall the address. So, I asked a gentleman working in a store which way is "3a Calle Poniente"? He pointed in a direction, and I walked away toward where he pointed.

After I had gone several blocks, I asked another person the same question. I was very surprised when this person pointed in the direction from which I came! I just stood there feeling stunned. I was lost in Antigua!

Note: It is now 7pm, and I've just returned from McDonald's [of all places!]. I ate a McChicken sandwich.

Lost in Antigua! [Continued]
4pm - By this time I had walked 4,400 steps and two miles [according to Pedometer++]. I was hot, sweaty and a little tired. But I kept walking, following directions for another 1/2 hour. Then I hailed a TukTuk Taxi.

The taxi drove to "3a Calle Poniente." But my hotel was not there. Actually, I found out later that the correct hotel address is "5a Calle Poniente."

The TukTuk drove away, and I was left standing on the sidewalk. That's when I recalled that my iPhone had info about my hotel! When I showed people I met my iPhone, they gave me instructions where to go. Again I got conflicting directions from nearly everyone.

Around 5:30pm, there it was in front of me. Hostal La Quinta, 5a Calle Poniente!

By the end of my day, when I would go walking no more, the Pedometer++ read:
9,154 steps, 3.8 miles

Note: This Pedometer++ distance is my personal best.

  3. Almost at the 10,000 step mark. A few more days of that and you won't have any problems keeping up with the walking.

You can download a mapping system to your iPhone that you can use offline called maps.me and it is free to download. That way as long as you mark in you "home" position before you go out for a walk, you will always be able to get back following the map.

Not sure if your remember Mary-Pat from when we met you at Hacienda Contreras in Mexico but she now lives in Antigua.

  4. Excellent idea to take photo of the hotel with your cell phone, especially if it has an address on it!

And I once took a trip across the Atlantic in the QE2 ocean liner. My single cabin had no window and was about the size you describe, but wonderfully comfortable. The bathroom was equally tiny, and I now describe my motorhome bathroom as QE2-sized!

  5. Another great adventure. Weren't we talking the other day about people giving directions even when they don't know where you want to go. When traveling in Europe I always carried a slip of paper with the hotels name and address - just in case.
I'm impressed with the steps - thought I was doing good at 6000 yesterday. WOW

    1. Hi Carol,

You are definitely doing GREAT with 6000 steps! I was kinda forced into walking 9000+ steps. I sure wouldn't have volunteered.

However, I agree about being on another great adventure.

Ever since making a friend of 104 year old Dora at Guava Gardens, my emotional attitude has evolved. Just by copying Dora's belief, "I can do anything and be successful."

Now that Dora belief, is my own belief. So powerful!
