Doctor's appointment

7:30 am - While I was still in Guatemala, I contacted my Kaiser doctor and told him about my physical problem controlling my right arm and hand and right foot.

In the reply, I received a phone number to get a quick appointment. I am calling that number this morning.

Battery charge
Yesterday I received a comment to my blog post which stated:
"I think that battery is....toast!"

This comment shook me! I was relying on the charger being computer controlled to prevent overcharging. So, I stopped the charging and reinstalled the battery in the Honda. The battery worked! It started the engine. It's not toast.

BTW, the reason this battery is low in the first place is because I use the Honda so little. I prefer Mariner, my electric bicycle, because it is much more fun. Sometimes weeks go by without using the Honda.

Appointment at Kaiser
8am - I just phoned Kaiser, and received an appointment for this afternoon at 5:30pm.

I am anxious to find out what comes from this appointment. My uncontrolled movement symptoms which I experienced in Guatemala are now greatly reduced. Of course I am darned happy about that reduction. But I really would like to know what caused it.

  1. Judging your battery "toast" was a bit premature. First, the reason you were unable to start your vehicle with "jumper cables" was because the battery was quite discharged. Had you left the cables attached (with the other car running) the battery would have eventually (4-5 minutes?) stored enough energy to start your car.

Now having said that, there is another issue you should be aware of. All modern cars have a tremendous draw on the battery... all of the electronics remain on even though the key is turned off (the clock and computer are examples) The damage this does to the battery is not well known. It is charging up the battery that eventually destroys the cells inside. So letting the car sit idle for several weeks and then charging the battery over and over shortens the life of the battery considerable. There are a couple ways to prevent that -- one is to disconnect the battery before storing the vehicle (you would need to reset the clock, radio, etc. each time) and the other is to hook a "trickle" charger to the battery which would keep the battery fully charged all the time and, thus, extend its life (this, of course, requires being close to an electrical outlet).

    Good luck.

  2. Maybe you could use a Battery solar Maintainer that can be placed on your dash or rear window inside when not using the car.

  3. Why not just start the Honda every other day and let it run for a few minutes ? Also, I really enjoyed your trip but am so thankful you are HOME once again - there is a good chance you have Essential Tremors - they are 10 times more common than Parkinson's - Good Luck at the doctors today - Cindy

  5. Glad you are feeling better. The battery thing is a problem with the cars that have a computer because it is always taking some of the charge from the battery. I have an 06 VW and I experience the same thing the battery was dead after a couple of months. I installed a battery maintainer (charger) and it solved the problem. I didn't have to change the battery it held a charge.
