Mattress

Mattress Gone Astray

You may recall, Dear Reader, that I ordered a mattress for my bed.

I've been having, just recently, things go wrong with deliveries. Something went wrong with the delivery of this mattress.

According to the Post Office, an attempt was made to deliver the mattress yesterday. However, the delivery could not be made. Because, according to the post office, the mailbox was full.

That seemed rather odd to me. That a mattress would not be able to be delivered into a mailbox, because that mailbox was full. I guess that if the mailbox was empty, somehow, someway, the mattress would have fit inside the mailbox.

Amazon
The mattress was ordered from Amazon. I wanted to have the mattress scheduled for a re-delivery. I phoned Amazon customer service to arrange for that
re-delivery. However, I was having a great deal of difficulty understanding what the support person was saying. Her accent was the cause of my not understanding.

I asked the actual location of the support facility. "Philippines", was the reply. Apparently, Amazon, in an attempt to save on costs, uses people from the Philippines. That's the reason that it was very difficult for me to understand the Amazon support person. It's the accent.

I am guessing, that for Amazon, cost is a higher priority than subjecting their customers to the challenge of understanding Philippine support persons.

When?
So, when will the mattress arrive? Good question. After the Amazon support phone call ended, I realized that I did not know.

But I was bewildered.

7am - Budget challenge
My retirement funds are being managed by Vanguard Advisors. My advisor has told me many times, that if I continue spending at my current level, I will run my fund down to zero while I am still living. That as you may imagine, is not a good thing!

I was not concerned about running out of $dough$. Because the Vanguard calculations are based upon me reaching the age of  100 years.

I asked my advisor, what age I will be when my retirement fund goes to zero?Based on my current spending level, my Vanguard advisor informed, "You will reach 94 years."

I told myself not to worry. Nobody in my family went past 90 years. However, lately I have spending money like water.

NOTE: I AM POSTING THIS NOTE AFTER RECEIVING COMMENTS WORRYING ABOUT ME RUNNING OUT OF MONEY DURING MY RETIREMENT. I WILL NOT [REPEAT NOT] RUN OUT OF MONEY DURING RETIREMENT!

In order to go on the waiting list at  Jojoba Hills Escapee Park, I had to own an RV. Miss Twayler cost about $32K.

When I go to the top of the Jojoba Hill's waiting list, I'll have to come up with about $31K.

Now, I want to buy the little Scamp trailer so that I may go forest camping in comfort. The Scamp will cost about $13K.
  • Miss Twayler = $32K
  • Buy-in at Jojoba = $31K
  • Scamp = $13K
Heavens to Betsy! That totals $74K!

I am a bit afraid to hear what my Vanguard advisor will reply now when I ask, "At what age will I run out of retirement?"

A Budget is the answer!
I just hate to go about calculating a budget. Never was any good at that. Instead, in past times when I had a challenge as this one, I simply put all credit cards away and began using only $cash$. Impossible to go into a hole when spending only cash.

Could run out of cash though during the month though! 😩

8am - What to do about mattress gone astray
I've been considering what I should do about the mattress that did not get delivered.

My decision: Do nothing

It is not for me to go around trying to get the Post Office, UPS or FedEX to do their job. What will happen is, that I will report the delivery not received and the sender will replace the item.

11:30am - Campsite pic
Likely because of the terrible experience during our Nite Camp last weekend, Little iPhone's pics were not published in our Blog.

We found one pic that we would like to share with you! Here it is below,

Big Tent where we abandoned it at our forest campsite
Wrightwood, California

4pm - Full extension slide out drawer
We drove over to Home Depot in the City of Apple Valley. Bought lumber, cut to dimension, for the two full extension slide out drawers going to be installed into Miss Twayler's pass thru storage area.

The cost of the lumber, is an absolutely fantastic buy! Only $85 cut to dimension! No charge by Home Depot for the labor to cut the lumber to size.

It should take me less than four hours to install the slides and assemble/install the two drawers. My (2) sets of US made Hettich slides cost $290.

If you went out and bought (2) full extension slide assemblies. Had two drawers constructed. Installed and everything. It would cost you about $2,000. And your slides would almost certainly be foreign made Accurides. Puny compared to Hettich.

The material for the full extension slides that I am installing:

6pm - Financial stuff
There may be confusion by some readers, concerning the meaning of my Blogging today. I wrote a bit about going on cash only spending. No credit cards. Not forever. But time enough to determine what my minimum monthly spending amount is.

When I am confident what that amount is, I'll be able to know how much I may spend each month. That is, without using my retirement funds above the monthly limit set for me by Vanguard Advisors.

  1. Running out of money is not a nice way to spend retirement. Hope you manage to make it last.

    1. Hi OAT,

I do not have any difficulty with money running out during retirement.

Did something that I Blogged lead you to that conclusion?

  2. I have been dealing with amazon for well over a decade and it seems the last few years things are falling apart with them. Their shipping people are absolute idiots judging by how things get packed. They recently sent me a counterfeit item and it wasnt third part, AMAZON.COM was the actual seller. Anyhoo, If you need support I recommend using their online chat to do it. They dont type with an accent :-)

    1. Hi Andrew,

Sorry to inform you, Amazon does NOT have chat support for customers seeking help with purchases.

    2. They sure do, I used it just last week. You have to go to the HELP section, then click NEED MORE HELP, then CONTACT US. Trust me, its in there but it wont let me post a direct link

  3. I used to love amazon's customer service. and then they outsourced the customer service center. When things go haywire it is a royal pain due to the inability to communicate with the customer service reps. there's a good chance I won't be re-joining Amazon prime this year, after many happy years of enjoying the perks.

I sure hope your mattress arrives.

    1. Hi Cyndi,

I agree. It is a pain.

What I do now, for example if something does not get delivered. I report the item as being lost. I then ask that a replacement item be sent.

After awhile, I receive the item ordered.

PS: With this method of dealing with companies, the situation gets resolved without me doing anything much. Not getting aggravated. Angry. Etc.

  4. Try being a South Louisiana Redneck and getting someone from India on the line, George. If I knew when I was going to die, I'd spend it in such a way that I spent my last $5 that morning, lol. Can't wait to see your little Scamp.

  5. The tent looks setup. What was the problem?

    1. Hi Rick,

You are correct. The tent is setup. It's an instant setup tent. One second it is in your hand, you let go, it is completely set up!

It was during the nite, that things went south for me. I was not able to recharge my computer or iPhone batteries. Stuff broke.

While trying to fix all the stuff that was not working, I was forced to leave the Honda headlights on for illumination. By the time that I thought that stuff was working and I could recharge those batteries, the Honda battery went so low, the starter would NOT turn-over the engine.

So, after all of that, I was still not able to recharge those batteries!!

Then, exhausted, I tried to go to sleep in that tent. Did NOT sleep all night long!

      Bad scene. Very bad scene.

    1. Hi HC,

Yes, that is what I did. Crazy, huh? $135 instant setup tent, still in the forest. But not in the forest for long. Very soon a lucky camper will be sooooo happy for the find!

  7. George - leaving your tent like that in the forest is littering and very self centered. Someone else has to clean that up. Shame on you - don't expect others to clean up after your poorly planned adventure.

    1. Hi Jim,

Well, that is not a fact that your comment makes. That is only your opinion, Jim.

From my point of view, the first person who finds that $135 instant pop-up tent will be happy as all get-out for the find. And take it home to make good use of it.

      Whatta yah think? 😃

    2. I think you are wrong. You could have taken your items with you and dropped them off at Goodwill rather than leaving them for someone else to clean up. How would anyone know they were abandoned? You seem very narcissistic and self centered to me.

    3. Hi again, Jim,

Well, you describe what I have done [tent wise] very accurately.

The difference is how we view it.

Question: Are you going to continue to follow my Blog?

    1. Hi Janet,

I never heard of "You Need A Budget." I will check it out, for sure!

I use Quicken. What can I state about Quicken? It is supported by almost all financial institutions. Uses financial institution data to prepare tax returns. Almost completely by itself. No user needs to do hardly anything to help with tax returns.

      Budgets too!

  9. but if a Ranger comes along & finds the trash rather than a camper, much time & paperwork is wasted, because it is an abandoned item.
