No test results

So far I've received no test results from the CT Scan that I took on Tuesday, 03/22.

If you recall, I had problems while in Guatemala with my right arm, hand and foot sort of twitching. I don't have that twitching problem now.

My Kaiser doctor is having me do CT Scans to try and find what caused this twitching. I have one more CT Scan scheduled for Monday, April 4th and this scan is of my head.

Bicycle decision
I've thought a lot about whether I should keep riding my bicycle. Remember that I've had a problem with being unsteady because of pavement irregularities.

My decision is to keep riding. And when I am riding, to keep special attention to being ultra-aware of where I am riding. Keeping completely alert.

Dilemma

Yesterday afternoon I was riding Mariner [my electric bike] to an appointment with Tina, the lady who cuts my hair. There was a very small irregularity in the road pavement. The joint between the right turn lane and the adjacent lane was not smooth. The adjacent lane was slightly higher.

I was looking right at the road as Mariner's front tire went over that joint. The tire skidded a little, because there was white lane paint on the joint. For just a moment, the bike was out of control as the tire skidded on the slippery painted place.

To ride, or not to ride
In a flash my mind asked if this was a sign that I should not be riding a bicycle anymore. Was this skid/control thing age related? Or was it simply something that happens when riding a bike?

For a senior like myself, this is not a simple question. Because once a decision is made to stop bike riding, it is a slippery slope ever after. I understand that the endgame is a mysterious place, not revealed to me. I have to play it, to find out how it goes.

Sizzler steak

When I was living in Guatemala for several weeks, I yearned for a good steak for supper. I went to many restaurants and was not able to find a good steak. This afternoon I went to Sizzler for lunch. At Sizzler I found the steak that I yearned for in Guatemala.

No problem CT Scan

The anxiety medication that was prescribed for me is Lorazepam. It worked fine! I had no anxiety whatsoever.

The tests took about 1/2 hour.

Drink water

The only thing on my calendar today is to drink 32 ounces of water. This drink thing is an instruction from my appointment for tomorrow's CT Scan.

I feel really good. Hardly any problem with my right arm. hand and foot. If it were not for the "dark cloud" of these two CT scans hanging over me, I would be doing really great.

So, since there is nothing that I can do about my feelings about these CT scans, I am going to get out of my apartment today and go to the YMCA to exercise. I plan to bike to the YMCA.

Hard time

Several things I am having a hard time adjusting to.

CT Scan: I hate knowing that I have appointments for CT Scans. That's because I have fear of being inside these machines. Although I have received a tranquilizer prescription from my doctor, I still have that dread lurking in my mind all the time.

Diabetes: My doctor informed that my recent blood test indicated that I have "pre-diabetes." Because of that, he has instructed me to go to a class on eating right for diabetes.

Cancer: The CT Scans will look for cancer.

Arm, hand and foot: I continue to have problems with twitching.

Period of adjustment
I'm aware that it always takes me time to adjust to stuff like these things. But that knowing does not keep me from feeling down about it. And that is how I have felt since returning from Guatemala.

I try to keep my mind away from dwelling on this stuff.

Beach bike ride
2pm - Shortly after making the above blog post, my friend John phoned inviting me to go for a bike ride on the beach walk from Mission Bay to Pacific Beach.

Of course I was delighted to be invited. The invitation got me away from my apartment. Also, today was a wonderful one to be out biking along the beach.

We stopped to talk at the Konos Coffee place in Pacific Beach. Then biked a few blocks to the Five Guys burger joint for lunch.

Finally OK

2pm - I am finally OK in the BM department. I was getting sooooo tired of staying home in order not to have a bathroom accident.

I just put Mariner my electric bike on charge and am going to ride it to the YMCA.

Staying home

For the time being, I am staying home. A problem with diarrhea is the reason. Other than that problem, I am feeling pretty good.

Invite for supper

5pm - I've received an invitation to supper at John and Mimi's home. I told John that I do not have much of an appetite lately. But he believes that his supper will be sooooo tasty, that it will overcome my lack of appetite. Hmmmm?

Feeling good

I wanted to let you know that I am feeling good. The problem with my arm, hand and foot seems to be greatly diminished.

Also, for the several months prior to now, I knew that I was eating less. But since I do not own a weight scale, I was not able to translate eating less into a weight loss. Since my doctor's appointment a couple of days ago, I am now very aware about that weight loss. I've lost 13 pounds in less than three months. I weigh less now than I have over the past 60 years. And I was a teenager then.

However, I am not overly concerned about all these changes that are happening to me. Not much for me to do about it anyways.

CT Scan

I met with my Kaiser doctor yesterday, and the end result of that meeting was that I will get a CT Scan of my head and chest. This will be done to rule out any sign of cancer.

My doctor's thinking is, that a cancer growing in my brain may trigger the lack of arm/hand/foot control.

My loss of 13 pounds since last December came out during my check-in. In talking about that weight loss to my doctor, I mentioned that I experienced a huge loss of appetite during this time. I used to really enjoy going out to eat. Now, I sort of do not like contemplating eating food.

Doctor's appointment

7:30 am - While I was still in Guatemala, I contacted my Kaiser doctor and told him about my physical problem controlling my right arm and hand and right foot.

In the reply, I received a phone number to get a quick appointment. I am calling that number this morning.

Battery charge
Yesterday I received a comment to my blog post which stated:
"I think that battery is....toast!"

This comment shook me! I was relying on the charger being computer controlled to prevent overcharging. So, I stopped the charging and reinstalled the battery in the Honda. The battery worked! It started the engine. It's not toast.

BTW, the reason this battery is low in the first place is because I use the Honda so little. I prefer Mariner, my electric bicycle, because it is much more fun. Sometimes weeks go by without using the Honda.

Appointment at Kaiser
8am - I just phoned Kaiser, and received an appointment for this afternoon at 5:30pm.

I am anxious to find out what comes from this appointment. My uncontrolled movement symptoms which I experienced in Guatemala are now greatly reduced. Of course I am darned happy about that reduction. But I really would like to know what caused it.

Battery first

The first thing that I had planned to do on returning, was to go see my doctor. But, when I went to start my Honda, the battery was discharged so that there was not enough power to turn the starter.

I phoned an emergency service company, but they wanted $75 to come out. So I asked my friend John if he had jumper cables. He did and he came right over with those cables.

When John and I went to connect the jumpers, up came a drenching rain storm! When the rain slowed and the jumpers connected, the engine still would not turn over. I read the Honda Fit manual, and could not figure out why jumping failed.

Battery charger
During the evening, I went over this battery problem in my mind. Even if the jumping cables had worked, I still would not have a fully charged battery. So, this morning I biked over to the AutoZone and bought a 10 amp battery charger.

However, there is no electric power in my apartment's parking area. If I bought an extension cord and plugged into the apartment's electricity, I would be breaking the rules.

But the battery is small. So, I disconnected the battery and carried it to my apartment. Whew! Small, but not easy to carry that far.

Battery being charged

Still charging
5pm - The battery has been on the charger since about 9am. And it is not fully charged. I am going to wait it out.

Early to airport

3am - Arrived at airport
The taxi dropped me at the Guatemala airport four hours before the take off of my flight. This gave me enough time to go thru immigration, inspection and eat breakfast..

Now as I type this blog post to you, I am still one hour before take off. Better to be four hours early than one minute late!

Health wise, I am OK today

Guadalajara
11am - Takes a lot of energy!

Boy-O-boy! My flight today is wearing me down. It's transferring from one flight to another that drains me. Because my flight originates in Guatemala and transfers to another flight in Mexico, I have retrieve my travel bag in Guadalajara, Mexico. Then put the bag back into the system so that it ends up in Tijuana, Mexico.

But before retrieving the bag, I have to go thru immigration. The lines are long in immigration.

By the time I went thru all of this stuff, I had crashed. Then my right arm started acting up. Bummer.

Starbucks
Noon - I am in Starbucks to use their WiFi. After eating one of their grilled cheese sandwiches and hydrating with bottled water, I'm feeling better.

I am thinking that I have to be much more careful when going on trips.

3:45pm - Home again
When my plane landed in Tijuana, everything went sooooo smooth. My flight bag arrived at the International Baggage Claim.

I went thru the Cross Border Xpress terminal. Used my Uber taxi app to call for a ride. And now I am home again.

The first thing I did in my apartment, was to turn on the heater. Really missed that heater!

PS: If you have not ever used the Uber taxi system, I suggest you try it. First thing to do, is to find Uber in Google. Then sign up. I love it!

Guatemala City

12 Noon - A tourism mini-bus is coming to pick me up at my Hotel El Amigo in Panajachel and will take me to my Hotel Carillon in Guatemala City.

I'll stay over nite at Hotel Carillon, and then take a taxi to the airport in Guatemala City. My Volaris flight takes off Monday at 6:50am. For international flights, Volaris Airlines wants me there 3-hours before take off.

Health
This morning my health is pretty good. Last nite I was able to sleep well. It is weird how my twitching arm and foot problem come and go!

Lunch

12:30pm - I'm not hungry. But I have to eat something. So, I'm at Ricassoli and ordered a chicken lunch.

I am looking forward to being home again and being checked out at my Kaiser primary doctor. When I get home, my instructions are to phone my doctor's office and I'll get in right away.

A little better

I'm still having problems with my right arm and foot, but it is a little better. It's a bit difficult to type because my jumpy right hand.

I've been blessed with good health, so I guess that I am spoiled by that blessing.

Fried chicken
7pm - This evening I am feeling a lot better. Down at the fried chicken stand, I picked up a chicken breast for supper. Then went over to Cafe Kitsch and bought a bottle of Coca Cola.

I am using the WiFi here to watch the movie, "Inherit The Wind" with Spencer Tracy.

Managing

3pm - I am managing the challenge of this physical malady, whatever it is, by mostly staying  in my room.

I received an email from my friend John, who is looking after my apartment during my absence. The email arrived in the morning, and I could not manage a reply until the middle of the afternoon.

I want you to understand that I am doing my best dealing with this thing while here in Guatemala.

Coming home early
4pm - My friend John encouraged me to come home early.

I have changed my Volaris Airline reservation to come home on Monday, March 7th instead of Friday, March 11th.

Parkinson's

Since arriving here in Panajachel, I have developed symptoms which I believe may be Parkinson's Disease. This involves my right hand and arm. Also my right foot. I arrived at this self-diagnosis by looking at videos of persons with Parkinson's on YouTube. Also by reading online medical information.

When I experience this problem, I have somewhat uncontrolled movement. Thru using a great deal of concentration, I'm often able to reduce these movements in order to  accomplish a task. For example, like right now. I am using both hands to type this blog to you.

Doctor appointment
I have made an appointment with my primary care doctor at Kaiser Permanente for March 15th. I return to the United States on March 11th.

Catching up sleep

Sometimes I have found that I am somewhat insensitive to my sleep. That is what happened this morning, just after my breakfast. As I was reading online news, I fell asleep!

I walked back to my El Amigo Hotel room, lay down on my bed. And the next thing I knew, it was 4pm! This kind of long sleep during the day does not happen often to me. But now I feel very refreshed.

Shower
5pm - I took a shower, and then continued watching a video that I bought awhile back. It is called, "MaidenTrip" and is the story of a young teenage girl sailing her boat around the world.

Click [here] to view trailer.

Chicken Salad
6:15pm - I'm at Campero Chicken and have ordered a chicken salad for my supper. This is a fillet of grilled chicken cut up in chunks with a lot of salad stuff. Avocado. Onion. Salad dressing. [40 Quetzales $5.40US]
