Buying Stuff in an Emergency

8:35am:
On the morning of Monday, October 9th, I became involved in an emergency situation. While driving south on Highway 101, there was an electronic sign over the road stating:
Highway 101 Closed at Willits

Where's Willits? Pulling over to the side, I pulled out my paper map. There was no internet to look up Willits [At that time, I did not know why the internet had failed].

A California Highway Patrol car stopped behind me. The CHP guy advised me  that a fire halted traffic on Hwy 101 at Willits [120 miles to the south]. Also, CHP advised me to go no farther south and to stay in this area for a few days. And, trying to go east to I-5 would take several hours due to fire equipment and heavy traffic.

Breakfast in Fortuna
Very close is the Town of Fortuna. I drove there for breakfast at the Redwood Cafe. On the door was a notice:
No Credit or Debit. Cash Only

I usually only carry about $10 to $20. But a few days ago, something got me to up that to $100 [My guardian angel?].

Cash! Sooooo darned important to have in an emergency. But how much?

What is your thought about how much cash to carry for such emergencies?



5:55pm:
City of Ukiah
About an hour ago, the Scampy RV Team arrived in Ukiah. First thing, George got his hair cut at Super Cuts. Shampoo too! Wanna look good for my breakfast date with my kid on Sunday!

This morning, while we were doing our laundry in Willits, we examined Tránsito's hitch ball. The hitch had rotated, and we wished to find out why?

It turned out that the hitch ball was mounted incorrectly. The ball had two large flat washers. And no lock washer.

We removed the flat washers and added a lock washer. The thinking is that now the hitch ball will not rotate anymore.

Reader comes to call
While we were working on Tránsito's hitch ball, a fellow walked up and introduced himself as a long-time Reader of my Blog! Wow! It always blows me away when that happens!

His name is Paul Dickey, and he has been a Reader since 2007! Paul was there with his Wife, Gerardina [who is from Costa Rica]. Also, his Son Brandon.

I toured Paul's RV. And Paul came inside Scampy to check it out. Gotta love it!

  1. I carry $50.00 or less, when I am down to $10.00 I get $40.00 from the bank. This seems to work for me.

      ★ Giant earthquake or hurricane?
      ★ A governmental disruption? [ie: Greece or Venezuela]
      ★ A log lasting event?

  2. The problem with cash is it can be stolen, and once it's gone it's gone. So I don't carry it on my person, but it's hidden in several locations in my RV so it's unlikely a thief will find it all.

    How much to carry? I have enough to buy two tanks of fuel and a weeks worth of food. I also have about a weeks worth of canned food in the RV. A dozen cans of soup make a good starting point, providing balanced nutrition that can be consumed either hot or cold with minimum preparation.

    Hopefully this will be enough to get out of a disaster area.

    2. Your house has wheels ... There's no reason you have to stick around in a disaster area.

      You can leave a hurricane area before the storm hits, in a major earthquake you may be stuck for a few days until roads are cleared (like you're seeing with these fires) but after that head on out of Dodge for a safer area.

  3. My rv is my earthquake home away from home. It might be excessive but I carry $1100 [Twenty's and one's] and a jar of quarters for things we might need or so share with others in need.

      That sounds like a good amount for emergencies to me!

      Another Reader commented not to place all emergency cash in one place. Safer to secret that cash in several places.

  4. I carry $200-$300. It's enough to get me by for awhile and isn't so much that it will cause lots of pain if it gets lost or stolen.

      That amount is great for short lasting emergency situations.

      What if the emergency situation lasts for several weeks? How much then?

    This seems to point up a larger matter: How dependent your lifestyle is related to internet access.

    When you advised about changing to T-Mobile, I was a bit concerned about the problems you're now experiencing. Their advertising heavily touts network "reliability", but that's not the true metric of their service deficiency; it's network "coverage" and how they compare to the "Big 2".
    They're just not real good outside metro areas. This could become an issue in an emergency.

    1. I also have a T-Mobile smart phone, pre-paid through Walmart's Straight Talk.

      I also have Internet data through AT&T.

      I've been in areas where T-Mobile didn't work but AT&T did, and vice-versa.

      I have 4 GB of data included with the phone plan, so it can act as backup when AT&T isn't available.

      I also set up a free Google Phone number that's accessed via the Internet. It sends an email with an embedded .wav file when someone leaves voicemail, or you can forward calls to another number like your phone.

      I think it will also allow outgoing calls via the Internet but I haven't explored this yet.

      The key is having different service providers for your phone and hotspot, though even this won't help if the Internet backbone into a disaster area is down.

      Now that I have developed a way to Blog using the Apple Notes app, I am no longer dependent on internet access!

      I may compose my Blog posts offline. With pics too. And easily publish all those Blog posts when the internet returns!

  8. I have heard it said that you should have a month's worth of cash on hand to cover emergencies. It would depend on how much you spend in a month. And you would need a good hiding place to keep it safe!

  9. Glad you are safe and now aware of fire locations... about 20 different fires... so I guess staying far away from all of them is important. Seems that you likely know California better than most of us....so please stay safe.

  10. I carry a largish gun safe that has room in it for a second wallet. I almost always use my debit card and often get $20 cash. Those $20 bills build up in my on-person wallet. Once I get over 5 $20s in that wallet (irregardless of other bills) I move any more than 3 (sometimes more depending on other bills) to the wallet in the safe. That safe wallet currently has quite a number of $20s in it. This is in addition to the approx $100 I carry on me.

      I believe that most persons are not as prepared as you are. As I understand it, in Puerto Rico, most did not have cash when the storm came.

  13. If I were you, George, I would stay north of the fires. The Bay Area is full of "unhealthy air." Just go into the Redwoods and enjoy yourself for a while. Do keep abreast of the latest news though since new fires can pop up anywhere. Keep your gas tank full and 2 ways out.

      However, I have a date for breakfast with my kid in Santa Cruz on Sunday morning.

      Right now I am in the City of Ukiah. About 190 miles north of Santa Cruz.

  14. When you get a ball hitch from the store it comes with The ball a lockwasher and a nut
    If I remember correctly when you had that system installed I believe you had two washers put on there instead of the lock washer cause you didn't like it
    Now that it loosened up under the two washers here's a trick for you.
    Go to any hardware store and buy locktite (threadlocker)believe it's made by Lucite with two different colors,, you want the strongest one which is red the blue is for medium work
    Take the nut an lockwasher off and put thread lock liquid on the existing thread,, tighten nut and lockwasher back up is tight as you can get it
    about 4 normal drops will do it
    ,,Drying time is about six hours
    Also,,,
    If you doubt your ability to tighten the nut secure go to the hardware store and get a nut the same size an double nut it,,

      I used flat washers because my Dura Safe Coupler guide was for a 1-1/4" hitch shank and I had a hitch ball with a 1" shank.

      I corrected that sizing error when I bought a 1" Dura Safe.

      Thank you for the Locktite advice!

      I have fashioned up a way to tighten nuts for the hitch and and wheels. It's a 4' long 1-1/4" pipe, clamped to my 1-1/2" wrench with hose clamps.

  15. We once threw $1000 away by accident. We never have that much in one place again. Now we carry about 700 in six places. The car (two places), two places in the trailer and both of our wallets. We also carry at least a weeks worth of food in the RV.
