Tweak revisited

Day 162

Does George have a......
.......crack in his record?

7:09am:
I'm forever doing Blog posts about tweaking. Why is that? Do I have a crack in my record?

Here is the thing about tweaking. Tweaking is simply making something better. Improving something. Addressing something that bothers, and changing stuff so that thing no longer bothers.

It could be anything. For example, awhile back I noticed that people who I talked to on the phone eventually made an excuse to break off. Several people did that. For a long time, I just accepted their excuses. Then one day I put that on my Tweak List.

At first I had no clue. Then one day I was on the phone with a very good friend. She said to me, "I have to go now. My puppy has to go for a walk."

.

I asked her, "Lots of times when we talk on the phone, you break off with an excuse. Why do you do that?"

She asked, "Do you really want to know?"

I replied, "Yes!"

So, she told me. "Nearly all our phone conversations go on too long. Breaking off this way feels better for me than just telling you, "Well, I have to go now."

Tweaking this information
So, armed with the  "phone conversations go on too long" thing, I began to tweak it. First thing I did was to write this phrase in my tiny notebook. When something goes into my tiny notebook, I go over that thing at least once a day.

I then began to be sensitive to how long my phone conversations lasted. When I felt that a particular phone conversation was getting a bit too long, I would ask:
"What are you going to do today?" This question would remind the person on the other end of the line of things they had going. Very often, that question ended the conversation. And in a very friendly and sensitive way.

This tweak improved my life. As Forest Gump would say, "One less thing!"

4:36pm:
Yingli solar mount finished!
I've been working on our Yingli solar mount [On Trรกnsito's roof ] since about 10am. Still needs a little tweaking. But the mount is essentially finished!

I love this kind of work. But at the end there, I was pretty much tuckered out.

6pm:
Headed out from Santa Cruz
The Scampy RV Team is now bound for the Town of Apple Valley. We are going there to attend to MsTwayler.

Do you recall my decision to sell MsTwayler? We bought Twayler in order to live at Jojoba Hills. Then, Jojoba Hills removed me from their wait-list.

After that, we found that we were sooooo comfortable living fulltime in Scampy. MsTwayler ceased to have a function in our RVing life anymore.

Sometimes things workout in extremely unexpected ways. I am happy as could be at how things turned out for me. It's seems to be that way for me. Something happens that at first seems bad. And then, I come out smelling like a rose!

  1. George, I am amazed at your competency of being able to make your world fit your needs... I have learned a lot from you over the years. The number one skill you possess, is to be able to look and think about a problem and then act on it in a thoughtful manor. I am trying to be more like you in that way....

    You amaze us every day!

  2. Why don't you just start your timer when you make a phone call when the bell goes off in 5 to 8 minutes politely end the conversation
Unless you're reading the New York Times to somebody over the phone 5 to 8 minutes is more than sufficient time to have an intelligent conversation no tweaking is involved

    1. Hi Ed,

That example was not something that I was seeking an answer about. It was a story that I Blogged about so that Readers would understand better about how they might benefit from tweaking.

  4. Your friend is truly a friend. I am also your age and we do tend to repeat ourselves and drag things on without realizing it. Your reaction and understanding are to be commended. Have a great day.

  5. Clever!! Putting the time frame on them. Better than you telling a fib about someone else calling in, or at the door.! Happy Trails, Penny

    1. Hi Tom,

I do not go along with the slang definition of the word:
      Tweaker

Seems like a corruption of the English language to me!

  8. George, I think that one reason you tweak so much is that the stuff we buy is poorly engineered and made with inferior materials. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at something new and said, "I could have designed this better", and then make the modifications. It gets to be a habit after while...

    1. Hi John,

      Yes, that is true.

However, improving products that I am using is only a part of my tweaking life:

➜ I tweak to improve how I do things
➜ I tweak in order in to have better relationships with others
➜ I tweak to achieve my goals
