Day 25

Vitamin Supplements

8:46am:
For several years, I have been taking vitamin supplements. A ton of them. In my To-Do list recently, I entered: Vitamin Analysis. I wanted to learn if the supplements that I take were missing some vitamins.

Looking in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter [Link], I was very surprised to find that vitamin supplements are NOT recommended! What's this?

Now I'm thinking that vitamin supplements are bad for me. Instead, I should be simply eat a better diet.

.

9:12am:
Filling vitamin dispenser
Every Sunday morning I fill my vitamin dispenser. This is a Sunday thru Saturday plastic dispenser. I've been doing this vitamin filling every Sunday morning for several years.

I guess that I won't be doing vitamin filling this Sunday morning! Or from now on, for that matter!

9:48am:
Body Mass Index
While doing my vitamin research in the Mayo Health Letter, I stumbled across info on Body Mass Index [BMI]. This is touted as a way of determining if a person weighs the correct amount.

I could enter my specs and learn my BMI:
➜ I entered my weight in pounds [145 lbs].
➜ My height [5' 10"].

This yielded a BMI of 20.8 which indicates that my weight is OK.

12:17pm:
Hospital medical invoice
A few years ago, I went to Emergency at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California. I was there getting treatment for about four hours.

About a month later, I received an invoice from John Muir. $87,000 was the charge. I kinda laughed at the $87,000 charge. And threw the invoice into the trash.

A few months later, a statement from Medicare arrived. The statement showed the $87,000 original hospital charge. Below that, there was an Approved Medicare Charge of $19,000. Medicare would pay 80% of that $19,000 [$15,200]. I would be responsible for the 20% [$3,800].

About six months later, John Muir sent me an invoice for that $3,800. I threw that bill into the trash also.

Several months later, John Muir sent me a bill for $3,800 less what was labeled:
Special Discount: $2,000 which left a balance of $1,800 for me to pay.

I did not pay that $1,800. Shortly after, I received from John Muir, a notice of intent to turn me over for collection. So, I phoned John Muir and offered to pay $1,000.

The $1,000 was accepted.

3:09pm:
South Shore Boat Ramp
We have just finished using the RV facilities here at the South Shore Boat Ramp. MsScampy was low on her fresh water tank level. So, we headed west here to fill the fresh water and dump holding tanks.

Now, we have made an Afternoon Camp at South Shore. When we Camp here, we like to do it close to the water. Because we like that view!

Baby Boid and the South Shore Boat Ramp!

9:01pm:
Back on Vitamins!
After reading what several Readers commented to me about me quitting my vitamin regimen, I am changing my mind!

I have the right to change my mind! I am 80 years old. And at that age, I have the right to do anything that I want to do.

Right after making this 9:01pm Blog post, I am loading up my vitamin dispenser!
😎

  1. Eating Healthy and eating right and taking vitamins go hand-in-hand
There's nothing wrong with taking vitamins as long as you balance the vitamins with the food. as you know most foods have vitamins and nutrition
It's knowing what that value is
    If you take an orange
The most notable way that oranges help your body is by supplying all the vitamin C you need in a day. A large orange gives you 98 milligrams of vitamin C,
So taking a vitamin C pill is not going to help you because the orange already supplies that.
So eating healthy and knowing what you eat and balance out your vitamins. you don't have to give up anything.
Know your food know your recommended daily allowance and balance your vitamins

And by the way. tehene ba`khagim!

  2. I have read several studies that agree that vitamins just make pretty expensive pee! There does not appear to be conclusive evidence that vitamins do any good. You're better off eating lots of veg and fruit.

  3. Just remember as we get older, our bodies aren't as efficient at extracting the nutrition from our food as it once was. Skip a few days and see how you feel. You may find you feel better taking those supplements.

    1. Hi Judy,

You are recommending that I compare how I feel when taking supplements and when not taking supplements?

That's what I shall do. And report back about that here on my Blog!

  4. I believe that if you eat properly, there is no need to take vitamin pills and that the whole industry is a big scam. Just my personal opinion.

  5. I'm anemic...have been all my life no matter what I eat. Therefore, I cannot give blood...I get sick if I do. My doctor put me on prenatal vitamins along with calcium and vitamin D. I was tested for bone density...the results showed loss of bone mass in my right hip (I wondered why my hips ached sometimes). Along with the calcium and vitamin D, my doctor recommended I do weight bearing exercise so I started walking. I walk 3 miles a day everyday except Sunday. The bone density showed good results and I did not need to go on medication...as a matter of fact my bone density increased...hooray!!

    1. Hi Rita,

You and I have had simikar experiences with bone density tests.

My right hip used to ache a lot. Now, after doing several years of me taking calcium and vitamin D supplements and exercising regularly at 24 Hour Fitness, my bone density test showed an improvement!

  6. I take a multivitamin every day and have for over 20 years. I have stopped a couple of times and find after about 10-14 days my attitude toward life and my demeanor really goes south and I hate the world. Takes about two weeks after resuming before I return to normal. I WILL not stop again.

      Very excellent question!

Why am I tweaking my vitamin regimen?

  8. My brother was a firm believer in Mayo. He went there every year for a complete medical checkup, 25 years. From one year to the next they said, oh my, you need a bypass! What? Mayo now does recommend vitamins for geriatrics, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems

I read Linus Pauling´s book 35 years ago and have been taking mega doses of Vitamin C since. 18,000 mls a day and I continue to increase the amount every year.

Dear brother used to say I was throwing my money down the drain. He who laughs first, laughs last. I´m sixty now and my cardiologist can´t believe it.

Medical doctors receive an equivalent of 4 hours of schooling on vitamins and natural health. It´s not good for business.

  9. To tweak or not to tweak, that is the question! Whatever the medical
Industry is for, I'm not sure I'm for! I think vitamins are very important.
I can tell what helps and what doesn't and I do experiment and find out!
I figure it out for myself. I also do a lot of research. I also have tried stopping things I take to see how I feel and it will be obvious if I need to
    continue or stop.
