Leak

Tránsito's Engine Oil

7:14am:
We set our alarm to wake up so as not be late for Tránsito's appointment to check the reason for an engine oil leak.

However, an alarm was not necessary on this morning. Yesterday we made a Nite Camp close to the San Diego Airport underneath the flight path of aircraft taking off. There is a quiet time for departing aircraft. A curfew restricts takeoffs before 6:30am. When the first plane went by, I woke up.

That engine oil leak is mysterious. There was no leak before Tránsito's recent engine oil change?!

.

10am:
Evans Service
Tránsito is at Evans Service Center in the City of La Mesa to see about the engine oil leak. Scampy is camped at Best Buy down the street.

Scampy has her own 12-volt power supply and is fully functional standing alone without Tránsito.

11:30am:
Transmission Pan
It turns out that the transmission pan is leaking. The job of fixing that leak will be done today.

1:48pm:
Bolts not torqued properly
I was told that the transmission pan bolts were not torqued down correctly.

I do not understand how that could be? Could the mechanic fail to torque those bolts? But there it is.

You know yourself. Sometimes stuff like this happens and arrives with no explanation!

  1. The last time that happened to me, the mechanic had cross threaded the drain plug when he replaced the engine oil. So I had a slow drip. As soon as they realized what happened, a new plug fixed it right up. Hopefully yours is a similar issue.

    1. Jay,

Maybe Tránsito's oil leak will be also easily fixed?

  2. My guess is that it is a loose oil filter when they did the oil change. Hope all goes well and is nothing serious...

    1. Dave,

I don't go under a car to do any maintenance anymore. Too hard for me to do that.

  4. What happen arrived at a known explanation,,, it's called a lack of experience

You usually have anywhere from 8 to 14 transmission bolts they usually torque down anywhere from 5 to 10 foot pounds depending on the size of the bolt
(The formula comes out like this)(one foot pound = equals 12 inch pounds)
All transmission shops use inch pound torque wrenches.
If someone does it by hand, there are never accurate,,, it's either under tight or over,, and both can cause the same issue
When the mechanic gets through you might want to ask him what the torque setting is.
The problem with torquing it down to tight is your crushes the gasket. there are usually made out of ,,cork,, so if it happens again later on down the road. you will need to replace the gasket, and specify it be hand torque down to the factory setting.
For future reference transmission fluid color is red,,engine oil it is dark brown,,

  5. I had that happen to me a few years ago, George. Took a pickup in for a transmission oil change, when I got home the pan was dripping and the bolts were only finger tight. They don't take much force, just enough to compress the gasket. I guess the mechanic started them all and then got distracted when he went to get the torque wrench.

I tightened them down (I think it was something like 10 ft-lbs) and all was good.

That incident either happened on a Monday or Friday
He went to get his torque wrench on Monday and he passed the donuts good excuse
Or it happened on Friday just before they handed out the paychecks even a better excuse
But the best excuse is how does he tell his boss that he screwed up and the boss owes you a 3200$ new transmission
