Scampy's House Battery

4:43 am:
I errored when installing a 35 amp-hour house battery on Scampy's tongue and a 95 amp-hour house battery located inside Señor Tránsito. The idea for this installation is to have power for Scampy when disconnected from Tránsito.

This 2-battery configuration works. However, there is a 1-battery configuration that is simpler. That is to have one battery inside Scampy's forward compartment.

The battery of my choice is the:

Trojan 31-AGM, 111Ah 12V AGM-VRLA Deep Cycle Battery

Note: The plan is to install this Trojan battery upon returning to San Diego for our winter camp.

Choices
This Blog post title is "Choices." I'm thinking about two sets of choices.
#1: The choice that I have to choose the luxury of a life living in a place like this hotel room.

Or......being a Vagabonder Supreme. Searching the roads for adventure! Always on-the-go. An exciting life every single day!

#2. The choices Holiday Inn made creating their hotel. A bathtub long enough for my legs to be stretched out the length of the tub. A tub high enough for the water to cover my chest when lying down. Big room. Nice air conditioner. A TV with every channel imaginable. A firm bed and comfortable pillows and blanket. Carpeted floor. Lovely lighting. A microwave. A refrigerator.

Lake RV
Scampy is going to remain at Lake RV another day. Her fiberglass door repair is going well, but not complete.

After Scampy's fiberglass door repairs are complete, there remains one last thing to do. Scampy's decorative red striping for the door needs replacing. That striping is scheduled to be received at Lake RV tomorrow.

So, we are staying now at the Quality Inn in the City of Sandpoint Idaho.

Quality Inn's pool and spa.

  1. The AGM Battery you are showing can be used as a Starting as well as a Deep Cycle Battery. They tend not to last as long. Be certain to get the one strictly for Deep Cycling.

    It's about time.

    1. Hi Rick & Kathy,

      Thank you for writing1

The type of deep cycle battery that is used for both house power [RV] and engine starting may be called an
      RV/Marine Battery.

I believe the battery pic is a true deep cycle battery. This type of battery does not deliver sufficient cold cranking amps demanded for engine starting.

  2. I think that is a good choice. I've been going back and forth between that one and the Trojan 31XHS 12V 130 AH Battery. The one you picked has the advantage of being able to move it back from the tongue into the forward compartment. Comparing apples to apples, the one you picked is 100 ah at the 20 hour rate. I still might go with the AGM too. I think it might be better sized for my 100 watt panel.

  3. 55 amp hr of usable power! Are you going to keep the other batteries or is this going to replace them both?

    1. Hi Rob,

Were you referring to the 35 amp-hour house battery on Scampy's tongue?

This 35 amp-hour battery is going out of service.

The only battery remaining after the changeover will be the Trojan battery shown in the pic.

  4. Actually that Trojan AGM series is a very good deep cycle battery. It would not be best for regular starting service but on a small engine like Transito it likely would do just fine for starting the engine as an emergency need. I am in year 10 of using AGM batteries on my rig.

  5. I like the luxury of firm bed, good lighting, bath tub and the ability to walk from room to room to outdoors (patio) to sit. If I want to rough it, I go tent camping. If I want to travel, I drive or fly; stay in hotel or Airbnb or couch surfer. I'm always so happy to come home to my own bed :-)

  6. Be sure you're charging the AGM at the proper rate. AGM's charge slightly differently than regular wet cells. Enjoy !

  7. When you bought your big trailer they probably came with the set of batteries. if you're never going to use it . why not just take an switch out those batteries with what you have now if there are sufficient

As far as Trojan batteries go, there right up there with rolls..

    1. Hi Ed,

Whoever buys my Big Trailer will likely want that battery,

  8. The AGM capacities have come quite a long way since I bought my last set of non-agm Trojans, their SCS-225 marine hybrids that powered Mr. Kit and will go on to power Ms. Merry, when I transfer them over.

When I last looked their AGMs, the capacities were around 80 amp/hours or less, which was far too little for running off grid without chargers for multiple days while traveling.

Its nice to see their capacities are close to that of their flooded Group 31s, now :).

    1. Hi Matt,

When I upgrade my House Battery, it will be to a less expensive battery than Trojan.

A 12 volt, AGM with at least 150 watt will do the job.
