Day 58
Lincoln City
You may know that there is more than coolness in Lincoln City.
There is the fabulous J's Fish and Chips!
I've been closely monitoring both Tránsito's Engine Starting Battery and Scampy's Deep Cycle Battery. Both of these batteries are receiving a charge while Tránsito's engine is running. I put a voltmeter on the output of Tránsito's hitch cable this morning in order to make sure that current is flowing to Scampy's battery. It is.
A hydrometer check of both batteries this morning showed that Tránsito's battery is in excellent condition according to a Specific Gravity reading.

A hydrometer check of both batteries this morning showed that Tránsito's battery is in excellent condition according to a Specific Gravity reading.
On the other hand, Scampy's battery shows a poor Specific Gravity reading. We believe that Scampy's battery may need replacing and are going to a battery shop to have the battery checked.
3:45pm -
We purchased a SurePower Battery Isolator [Link]. This isolator will prevent Tránsito's engine starting battery from discharging when Tránsito is not driving.
We made an appointment to have the isolator installed into Tránsito next Friday, July 14th. We have decided to hang around the Depoe Bay vicinity because this place is so extremely lovely!

4:30pm - Mo's World Famous Chowder
It is sooooo windy here. We are at the end of a street that dead-ends a few hundred feet above the Pacific Ocean.
We have ordered a bowl of chowder!
7:45pm - How many miles to horizon?

10pm - At Nite Camped a bit early
We usually arrive at a residential neighborhood Nite Camp around 11pm. Most residents are beddy bye by then.
However, this Depoe Bay town is kinda different.
People here sorta turn-in around sundown. Hard for the Scampy Team to be out-and-about here after dark without sticking out like a sore thumb!
We scouted out this Nite Camp during the afternoon and marked the location with "Car Finder App." It is a very quiet street. There are "No Parking At Anytime" signs all over the neighborhood. Residents do not appear to pay attention to these No Parking signs.
First thing after arriving at this Nite Cap, we turned on MrWave3, our noble catalytic heater. It's 56℉ now, going down to 52℉ by 4am. With the Wave3 on, i's nice and toasty inside Scampy.
.
So sorry George to hear you lost $100 to scam. I commented with a different kind of scam I received in the mail with a money order for $990 and a letter to follow certain instructions and to send a copy of front and back of my personal checks. I searched the sender and found fishy addresses in Florida, California and Washington. I'm taking the whole FedEx packet to the attorney general of our state and let them deal with who the scammer is. The request to send front/back of my check clued me in that this was a scam.
ReplyDeleteHi Rita,
DeleteGood for you!
I have reported my scam to Apple's security team.
George
.
Good for you, George and Rita. That is the only way to stop these low-lives. Writing a Blog about it is excellent too. It will wise up hopefully lots of people.
ReplyDeleteHi Vera,
DeleteYes! Let's all of us tonite, dance around a fire, howling, screaming and cursing those low-lives! 😎
George
.
oK...let's go!!!
DeleteHey George: you know on the south side of Lincoln city when you go over the little 101 bridge there's a big rock formation up there if you like I'll sell you 10% of it at a very low discount price and it only cost you $200 But I'm sorry I don't take iTunes cards
ReplyDeleteYou are a smart cookie the last time that happened it didn't cost you anything. But it could have,, what tripped you up this time $$
OK, Ed!
DeleteI believed that I was actually talking to an Apple support person!
Why would I not believe that, Ed? I got the phone number from a Google search.
George
PS: Remind me of the last time "that" happened.
.
Google search.
I think it had something to do with you. selling something, a TV or something, and they sent you a check for larger than the amount of what you were asking
DeleteBetween your readers and the bank you realized it was a scam
Good memory, ed!
DeleteI did catch on to that scam. I caught on because I stalled the scam guy sooooo long, that his check bounced and my bank notified me.
I was lucky with that one. Because I did not intentionally stall him. I was busy and did have time to deposit his check into my checking account

George that battery isolator serves the same purpose as the relay I described that come with factory tow packages.
ReplyDeleteDo you know how many volts are being delivered to Scampy's battery when Transito is charging it, and more important do you have a way to measure how many amps Transito is delivering?
Hi Nick,
DeleteYes, I do know. About 17 volts. Very low amps. It's a trickle charge. Less than 2 amps.
George
.
George if you have a multimeter
DeleteIf you put your multimeter on the positive side of your Ford transit battery and ground the negative side to the frame you're reading should be about 13.6v with the engine running ,, 12v not running ,,
Now at your trailer plug if you disconnect the trailer plug you should be able to be pulling about 13 V (lower due to loss of resistant )
If you plug the trailer back in to the Ford and measure the voltage from the negative an positive side of your battery on the trailer you should still be 13v
All the isolator is,is a glorified diode.
So if the back of the Ford is theoretically putting out 13 v
At that plug which is attached to the trailer battery you're only input is 1 v. 13v -- 12v =1v
Unlike your motorhome that you had. probably had an inverter, that inverter had a built in battery charger probably about 5 A
If you have 100 W Solar panel why not hook that up to the luggage rack
DeleteDisconnect the trucks 12 V input to the trailer. And substitute the solar panel and controller to The trailer battery. as long as you're hooked up as a pair you will always have voltage going to the battery driving or sitting
isolator not needed because all solar panels have a built-in diode
You said you were getting 17 V somethings wrong here.
DeleteWhen the engine is running, the alternator will typically put out between 13.8 at low idol to 14.8 volts.at 1200 RPM under medium load
If you have a higher number than this you have an alternator issue
Your amperage is determined by the alternators output you could have a 50 amp or 100 amp, it depends on what it is rated at,, you could have a 200amp,
Find an AutoParts house, use the Vin number, they should tell you what that vehicle is rated for.
In some cases, if the alternator sits above the engine anywhere you should be able to see a tag but don't count on it
Mister ed,
DeleteToo many words! Go do it again with 5% of these words! 😎

Depoe Bay is a favorite spot of ours George. I know Mo's has the name but the Sea Hag is our favorite for all things seafood, you might want to check it out.
ReplyDeleteHi Matt,
DeleteOn the way to Morning Camp today, I spotted Sea Hag for the first time.
Guess that means going there!

These scams seem to get more clever all the time. I almost got socked into one with a so called Hewitt Packard (printer problem) web number that I googled. It did not sound right when the agent told me I had corrupt information on the NEW printer and he would sell me a program to correct the problem. Ha! I hung up.
