Day 141
Infection!
1:09am:
Yesterday evening, Reader L. Beman [Lynn], commented that my swollen sore elbow is a sign of infection. And I did not take her advice to see a doctor!
Well, I was sooooo wrong. And Reader Lynn was sooooo right!
Around 10pm last nite, my left hand ballooned up! I took myself to Salem Hospital Emergency. I am there now in the ER waiting for treatment.
My infected hand!
.
Blog not going private
Some Readers may have missed my announcement in my Blog that the decision to go private has been scrapped.
Blogger allows only 100 Readers for a private blog. Not even close to what was needed for my Blog.
Sooooo, my Blog is staying public. Actually, it turns out that I am happy the way that turned out!
1:59am:
Puerto Rico
Every evening at supper, I tune into the PBS NewsHour. For the past few days, PBS spent considerable broadcast time on the disaster in Puerto Rico.
That got me thinking how well off I would be in the midst of a disaster. My home is the Scampy/Tránsito Team.
We have:
➜ Solar power
➜ Honda generator
➜ A ton of hand tools inside Tránsito
➜ Enough food and water on board to last a month
The Scampy Team is able to hunker down thru a major disaster and come out smelling like as rose!
Except for one huge thing!
We would likely be the only ones in good shape. All around us, the mass of people would be hurting for all the things that we on The Team have in abundance!
That abundance likely will put us in harm's way. The people without will undoubtedly come for our stuff.
How would we go about being safe? Protecting ourselves? Click [Here] to read n an answer.

4:23am:
Back in Scampy
I learned something vital about wound care. Burned skin allows bacteria to enter my body thru the wounded tissue! Cleanliness is paramount in wound care!
Lack of knowledge was the primary reason for my getting an infection.
It took three hours to get treated in the ER. I am sooooo happy to be back inside Scampy. Now I want to get at least six hours sleep!

12:24pm:
Kaiser Pharmacy
I'm at the pharmacy to pick up my oral antibiotic that the emergency room doctor prescribed for the infection of my burn tissue.
3pm:
Grey water tank connection
We bought a grey water input connection from Scamp Trailer. It's a plastic plumbing fitting with a 1" barb on one end and a 1" thread on the other end.
We have drilled a 1-1/8" hole in the new grey tank. The plastic fitting will extend into that hole and be secured to the grey tank with pop rivets and Gorilla Glue.
Tough old George working with the pain!
.
Oh my God, George...! Redoubling my prayers for your well-being!
ReplyDeleteHi Friend Pete,
DeleteMy hand looks really bad! Actually, I have come for medical care in time. Should be OK soon.
Your buddy,
George
.
Take care of that burn and keep it clean, now you know. Hope you heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteour awesome travels,
DeleteThank you sooooo much!
You've been with me a very long time. I appreciate your support.
George
.
That's what you get for use in the bathtub if Motel 6
ReplyDeleteThe bad folks were there before you
did the doctor tell you about antibiotic cream
Mister ed,
DeleteYes on antibiotic cream.
George
.
Be thankful you are not in Puerto Rico. No help for those who need it there.
ReplyDeleteMarilyn Dennison,
DeleteI agree! 😟
George
.
George, I gasped when I saw the photo of your arm and hand! It is quite shocking. I hope you feel better very soon and are out doing fun things instead of spending time in hospitals.
ReplyDeleteJules,
DeleteYes! That pic looks sooooo bad!
I have the understanding of wound care now that should allow my burns to mend quickly.
George
.
A reply from yesterday's post
ReplyDeleteI do not know for sure. A Doctor of psychology has advised me that a psychopathic personality might be behind these things
. 5 to 15 percent of the population means that for every twenty people, three of them may fall within the almost psychopath range.
Wow that's pretty interesting three out of 12 of your readers could be psychopaths, sounds almost like an elite club
I trust you have no motive to come to Florida?
Mister ed,
DeleteMost often, your comments are very helpful and informative. And then ..........
George
.
I know I'm just a ray of sunshine for you
DeleteMr. Ed. You sure make me laugh. Best wishes to you George!
DeleteYou must be one of the three since you mentioned you were being advised by a "doctor of psychology".
DeleteMister ed,
DeleteRay of sunshine? i don't know about that.
But I like to read your comments.
George
.
Goodness,George!!! Glad to see you went to the ER, have been worried an infection might happen. Praying for your continued healing and adventure!
ReplyDeleteVicki,
DeleteYes, I got good advice from Reader L. Beman [Lynn], to go to a doctor for care of my infected burns.
I am such a lucky guy!
Thank you for your prayers,
George
.
George, Are you going to be ok to travel like that? Maybe you should stay and extra week to recover. Would hate to have you stuck in the middle of nowhere and have a really bad infection or ???
ReplyDeleteMight want to stay, heal, and just relax. What does Boid think?
Long-Range Weather Forecast looks like we're starting to dip into our rainy season with some rain (Friday) and showers this weekend. Snow should stay above pass levels (Siskiyous). It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to wait just a little bit longer. Please be safe & God Bless!
-Tom L.
Tom,
DeleteYes. I am OK to travel.
I was much worse than this on September 15th. The day that I got burned. I traveled then.
You are very kind toward me.
Thank you,
George
.
Sheez George! I did not expect to see it that bad. Take care, and I wish you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteXplorer Steve DIY,
DeleteIt looks in that pic, a hell of a lot worse than it actually is. Even I was surprised how that pic turned out!
George
.
Yes I also had advised to see a doctor when blisters appear three days after burn...a sign of infection too! Agree with Mr. ED should not use hotel/motel bath tubs unless you bleach it first...full of germs these hotel/motel tubs are. I traveled a lot while working, so if I wanted to take a soak..I used bleach to clean the tub and floor and never went without foot wear. The bedspread is also full of germs so used Lysol on bedding and floors. I traveled a week at a time so cleaned up my room for the long stay. Take care and use antibacterial wipes and/or liquid to wash hands. I used green soap they use in hospitals to wash any wounds. Believe me I have had many surgeries and the wounds I had to keep clean after.
ReplyDeleteRita Mizell,
DeleteMy understanding is, that it is very common for blisters to appear several days after a burn. A blister is NOT a sign of infection.
Thank you sooooo much Rita, for taking time to help me.
George
.
Do you own a firearm, George?
ReplyDeleteSuper Cub,
DeleteHmmmmm? Right here in my public Blog?
George
.
Why not? I have a closet full of them.

ReplyDeleteJoan,
DeleteAll those clovers are for me? Because you believe that I am a lucky guy? 😎
I do seem to come out of tough situations smelling like a rose. Don't I?
George
.
George
Yes yes and yes and sending you more good luck!
DeleteGeorge, I remember when you were referred to a burn unit for specialty care of the burn wounds. When a child here was burned from setting off fireworks improperly, his mother said that the burn unit provided oxygen therapy to the wounds which accelerated the skin healing process. Let's you and I face it; we are not as young as we use to be, and the regeneration of skin, etc. does not happen as fast anymore. Paying a visit to a specialty medical burn unit certainly wouldn't be a bad idea, and they may suggest oxygen therapy for you for those burns.
ReplyDeleteDee Tillotson,
DeleteI seem to have, even at my age [80 in November], extremely good recovery ability when hurt. Also, my pain thresh hold is far greater than most persons [according to my doctors].
I attempted to get an appointment to a specialty burn center in Beaverton. Didn't work!
George
.
I have to say (and it's an understatement) that Beaverton hasn't been very good to you. Getting back to your old stomping grounds is a great decision. At least you are familiar with the medical community there, and they are familiar with you.
DeleteHere's an answer to your question,,,how would we go about being safe
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness I'm kind of concerned about the article link for self-defense survivalist that you posted
If you leave the firearm home I would agree with you 100%
There are plenty of other means of self-preservation and defense
However if one is going to carry a firearm in their presence
(I'm not saying you have one) but One always needs to remember if it's you and one other person you have a 50-50 chance
It comes down to two things one is adrenaline an 2 is tunnel vision
If you're NOT trained you have both against you, your chances at 25/75
At your age I'm not going to suggest you go take an IDPA course Challenge
(IDPA) International defensive pistol Association i'm a 22 year member
When your hand and your feet get better what I would suggest you do is to find a paintball group (almost every city/town has one) take their Close quarter handgun game course, Believe it or not it's actually fun AND Survival depends on the highest score
And on a side note to a true militant or survivalist that article is a joke
That's your NRA tactics at work
Guns only work if you know how to use them
After you read it,, if you don't want to post it feel free to delete it
Sent from my iPad
Mister ed,
DeletePlease understand that I do not carry fire arms with me.
My Blog post that you are writing about was addressing my concern as being a target during a disaster. I would be a target because of all my resources:
We have:
➜ Solar power
➜ Honda generator
➜ A ton of hand tools inside Tránsito
➜ Enough food and water on board to last a month
It seems to me that even though I am an old man [80 years in November], I would be better off with protection during a disaster where law broke down.

So glad you made it to the ER, George !!! I was holding my breath for you regarding infection....... especially when you described the pain when standing.... what an ordeal this has been for you and keeping everything going is a real credit to you !!!
ReplyDeleteI cheered that the court case is behind you .... BRAVO
WHat happened to your plans and deposit at the Escapees campground? I missed something......
Best of luck, George, you are on the upside now ...... Travel On
SallyB,
DeleteThis is such a good comment for me to receive!
➜ Please understand, that the pain when standing wasn't from an infection. That pain came from my healing burn on my right foot.
➜ Thank you for writing about me:
"what an ordeal this has been for you and keeping everything going is a real credit to you !!!"
➜ Cheering for the court case ending. Thank you!
➜ Plans for the Escapee campground are over. I am OK with that.
Bye,
George
.
Those burns look to me too big for home care -- like your first health care provider should have hospitalized you for a while and prescribed an antibiotic first thing. So sorry that happened to you,
ReplyDeletegrubstreetnm@gmail.com,
DeleteMy burns now, are sooooo much smaller than before. Only my left hand and wrist. And my right calf.
When I first got burned, the areas affected were:
➜ Both hands and arms
➜ Both feet and legs
➜ My face
➜ Left ear
George
.
So sorry to see your poor arm like that. It's good that you now have information on how to look avter your burn. It sure is a big one. Hope your keg is not as bad as that. Take good care of yourself! I'll keep you in my thoughts
ReplyDeleteVera,
DeleteI learned a whole lot about wound care as a result of my bone head mistake with allowing my burn to become contaminated!
Thanks,
George
.
I didn't mean to pry in my comment yesterday. I understand that you need to watch the info you are giving out now. I just saw some comments saying something about your case being over and done and couldn't find anything in your posts about that.
ReplyDeleteTom Pawka,
DeleteI made a small Blog post about my plea deal on September 25th.
George
.
Stay strong, as you always do!
ReplyDeleteM2,
DeleteTrying!
Thanks,
George
.
