A Place to Sleep
7:28am:
Last nite on YouTube I watched a CBS 60-Minute video program titled:
Hard Times Generation: Families living in cars [Link]
Also, the coming of the signs stating: No Parking 10pm to 5am.
Families living Under-The-Radar so as not to be in contact with police or criminals. That life is a terrible thing to endure.
Can you imagine not having a safe place to sleep?
8:01am:
Compassion
Many citizens have no compassion for the homeless living in their community. They call the police on them.
God forbid a homeless person's vehicle would appear on their street.
.
.
We were "homeless" in Phoenix during the 1970s. We slept in a tent in the National Forest. Now is that not allowed. I don't know what we would have done instead. We had a grand adventure...now it is a crime.
ReplyDeleteHi Janet,
DeleteIt is a shame that there seems to be a xenophobic kind of thing about persons on the bottom of the economic ladder. Especially of persons who live on the streets.
It's almost as if persons who have apartments and houses believe that the homeless persons are living on the streets by choice.
George
.
I don't know as I would call sleeping on the street all that safe.
ReplyDeleteI understand your point but part of the law is to keep neighborhoods safer.
Don,
DeleteIf the law is simply to keep neighborhoods safer, how come that quest for safety comes mostly during the night?
During the daytime, homeless may park their vehicle almost anyplace without hassled by the cops.
George
.
Because most burglaries and home invasions happen at night.
Delete90% of the time it is the person quietly sleeping in the RV on the street who is hassled by the homeowners, not the other way around. Who is in the most danger here?
DeleteWhere did you get your statistics Croft?
DeletePersonal experience in boondocking in Canada, the USA and Mexico. We don't do it often but we have been woken up by hot rods burning out beside us, a milkshake thrown against the side of the MH and once by security telling us to leave AFTER being given verbal permission to park for the night by management.
DeleteHi again, Don,
DeleteYou could become homeless yourself one day. Homelessness happens to people, thru no fault of their own.
Bitter times may be on the horizon for working folks caused by huge changes in automation.
The retired living off pensions may find their income gone with the wind!
If that happens to you, what then?
George
.
As usual George you've completely missed my point.
DeleteI'm merely pointing out why the law is in place. Nowhere in my answer did I say I thought it was good or bad. But you jump to conclusions so often.
Everyone has to be someplace...to be harassed like that is sad. Where are they supposed to go?
ReplyDeleteSuz,
DeleteIt seems that the place our society chooses for the homeless to live is anywhere but not near me!
George
.
I've been watching quite a few of those videos recently. Unbelievable. One was of a three-mile bike path lined with families living in tents. Scampy and Transito are pretty special.
ReplyDeleteLBM,
DeleteAlthough I am doing the same things as families in the video, I'm doing them voluntarily not because of economic circumstances.
I feel very fortunate to be living this free and easy life.
George
.
Touching video. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteWayne,
DeleteI was at the edge of tears watching that video.
George
.
Makes one stop and think just how lucky we truly are!! What bothers me the most are people who fortunately have so much are unwilling to help those folks with hardly anything! I always try to help anyone who needs a meal or clothing and Lord knows I don't have that much!!
ReplyDeleteSo if there's a safe realistic solution to the homeless what is it
ReplyDeleteEd,
DeleteBringing manufacturing jobs back to the USA.
George
.
Bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US. I don't think it's going to make that much difference
Deletetake the time to think about it, if you travel around how many help want ads do you see, I can tell you here in Florida there's not enough people to fill the positions
The 3 culprits are
lack of affordable housing
Lack of social network
lack of mental health
3 Sub culprit
Lack of proper identification
lack of being able to pass a drug test
Lack of motivation to work
In our company alone we need at least 15 more employees
To bring our production up to meet the demand
So what's happening here
Lack of proper identification to meet federal standards 60%
failure to pass a drug test 98% (cost to the company $35)
When we do hire that 2% most have a lack of motivation (or the motor skills )to come in the next week
Lack of proper transportation (The company is on a bus route)
As well as fail a random federally mandated drug test
What is the manufacturers solution
Think creatively
We hire work release inmates from a state facility to fill 20% of our gap
Right now I'm prepared to go to Denver Colorado to pick up a $750,000 automated truss machine, it will be run by One computer programmer and one layout person and eliminate 4 people
If we buy another machine I can put those four to work after four weeks of computer training
Where only one company if you do the research you will find that 99% of all companies cannot fill their positions due to the above reasoning and then some.
and now you wonder why things go to the Pacific rim to be made
Our company does not wish to participate in (TFW)temporary foreign worker's
Out of the 400,000 +- Puerto Ricans that came to the US after the hurricane we hired only one that was qualified
And we haven't even touched on the subject of qualifying pay/ unions/ federal state/local
So if you know anybody that fits in the above criteria and knows which and of the hammer to use i'll be glad to interview him
Sent from my iPad
I'm sorry this is a long rant I know you don't like it,
Deletebut you as an ex business owner
But you Didn't have to deal with a lot of the red tape that you have to deal with today
My suggestion is to sit down with a plant/ Company owner or manager and let them rant I'm sure you'll be shocked
Ed,
DeleteYou make excellent points in your 11:25am reply!
