4,433 Blog Posts

This morning I noticed the number of Blog posts that I've made since my first post on May 14, 2003. I have made 4,433 Blog posts.

There have been 5.435 days since then. That's 14 years, 10 months, 17 days. This means that I've missed a Blog post 1,002 days.

Not a perfect record. But not a bad record either! čśÄ

Short pants

In years gone by, I always searched for "T-Shirt & Short Pants Weather." I still do! Every morning before dressing, I open Scampy's door, stick my head outside and test the temperature.

It's 54℉. Warm enough to dress in T-Shirt & Short Pants and my Teva sandals.

San Diego! Gotta love it!

Forest camp

My mind has been meandering about our long-ago Forest Camps. One particular Forest Camp stands out. That camp was above the Main Salmon River in the State of Idaho. MsTioga squeezed between two huge boulders about 50 feet above the river [Link].

The Scampy Team would love to make Forest Camps as MsTioga used to do. MsTioga had no problems going on dirt roads in the forest. Going up a hill in the forest was no problem for MsTioga.

Not so for Señor Tránsito with his front wheel drive. We must take great care where Tránsito goes because he may get stuck!

Even so, we would like to make an extended Forest Camp someday soon. Somewhere in the boondocks. Away from towns. A place where we would depend on sustaining ourselves with only the food, water, and propane that we have onboard.

History & Maintenance

Today I spent the day studying history and establishing a detailing routine for Scampy and Tr├ínsito.

The history that has affected me the most today is that of George Amstrong Custer and his wife Elizabeth Bacon. The history of George Custer that I had read before today focused on the Battle of the Little Big Horn where Custer and all of his 263 men died fighting Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors.

In fact, Custer was one of the most courageous field commanders in the War Between The States. Custer was brevetted to brigadier general at age 23, less than a week before the Battle of Gettysburg, where he personally led cavalry charges that prevented Confederate cavalry from attacking the Union rear in support of Pickett's Charge.

His wife, Elizabeth Bacon Custer spent much of her life campaigning to create the image of George Custer that we know today.

Just yesterday I Blogged to you that I viewed a video about John Adams. Also, I viewed videos about Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson.

In response to my Blogging, a Reader commented on visiting Monticello, Jefferson's home. That got me to thinking about traveling with the Scampy Team to the State of Virginia to visit Monticello myself.

In the past, traveling was so easy for me. That's why I imagine traveling to Virginia. I also dream about traveling to Guatemala again. Also, Utah to visit the lovely National Parks.

Then I get to comparing staying in the San Diego area with all of these traveling options. Hmmmmm? I'm really comfortable here in San Diego!

A new 20 lb propane tank is being delivered today. I bought this tank because it contains a built-in gage. My old propane tank uses an add-on gage which does not work well.

Before using the new tank, I understand that it must be purged. I'm searching for a place that can do that purging and also check out this new tank for proper operation before filling with propane for the first time.

A subscription to Amazon Prime gives me access to the HBO Series
titled, "John Adams."

This excellent HBO production is a video showing the founding of the American Republic as if the viewer is actually there watching what went on some 244 years ago. The people who I only read about in history books come alive on my computer screen!

I am so very moved by this experience!

Internet speed

My phone carrier is T-Mobile. My plan is for unlimited data. After 50Gb is used, my internet speed slows down making movie videos almost impossible to view.

However, I've found that there are many locations where internet speed does not slow down, and in fact is very fast! In these locations, which are many, watching movie videos is an excellent experience after using much more than 50Gb of data.

I am delighted with finding out about fast internet after 50Gb because as you may know, I am a movie fanatic!

Yesterday my friends John and Mimi gave me a supper invitation. Love that!

On the menu is John's homemade pizza. I have eaten John's pizza many times. This time his pizza crust was the very best!

I really love sharing with John and Mimi the things that have happened since the last time we were together.

Unusual Day

It's unusual for several reasons. Firstly, I am making this Blog post after sundown! That's a first.

This morning I met a really cool RVer whose name is Steve Wallace. I should have taken Steve's picture. But I goofed and didn't get that pic. I met Steve who was Nite Camped just in front of my Nite Camp. We began chatting and our chat went on for over 3-hours!

Steve has been RVing in a car since 2000. He takes off from Seattle when it gets cold and travels to the San Diego area where he stays until Seattle weather warms up. Then he returns to his home.

I'm really trying really hard to stop eating when I'm not hungry. Man-O-Man! The drive to put something in my mouth is very strong. Especially something crunchy.

I fight with myself about eating. Unfortunately, both sides of the fight are me! Right now I am yearning for Planters Dry Roasted Peanuts!

Over at Sprout's Farmers Market, they sell bulk chocolate dipped peanuts. Please don't comment that I should avoid buying these chocolate dipped peanuts. I am too weak for that solution!

Aging challenge

I've been struggling with the reduction in my sensitivity to physical things which are the result of aging. For example, I do not know if I am hungry. Or when I am eating if I am full and need no more food.

As a result, often lately I have been eating food that I do not need. My weight which should be about 150 lbs is now 159 lbs. Often I eat only because of the pleasure that I get from eating foods that taste good.

Do you experience these things too?

Best day

Sunday is the best day for me to go to 24 Hour Fitness. And in the early morning is the best time.

First thing is taking a shower. Then soak in the spa. Then exercise. Today is lower body day. Abdomen. Lower back. Legs.

My goal with my legs is to be able to be able to stand up from the floor without holding on to something for support. A tough goal for this 80-year-old-guy!

Short circuit

Last nite it rained. For air circulation, Scampy's rear window was opened a few inches. Rain entered thru the window screen. Some of that rain ran down the blind and then, into our 12-volt inverter.

The inverter short-circuited.

Shopping for a new inverter
We tried to locate a new inverter online that was available for local pickup. Finding and buying that inverter took a few hours.

First, we tried Best Buy and found very little selection inside the store.

Then we tried Fry's Electronics. Bingo! We drove to Fry's which was only
8 miles distant.

We on the Scampy Team wanted you to know that we are OK. I took a day off blogging. Spent the day at Ventura Cove. A gorgeous day too!

My 24 Hour Fitness routine got changed this morning! By 7:55am, I was soaking in the spa. After soaking for 10-minutes, I exercised. I usually do exercising first, then the spa. Mixing things up is good for me.

The 24 Hour where I work out is on Clairmont Mesa and is one of the best clubs that I have used. The machines here are really high quality. And there are lots of duplicate machines so that it's not necessary to wait.

In the future, I may begin to use free weights to do my exercising.

From a very early age, I was taught to love work. My sister and I cleaned the house. Made our beds. My Dad owned a machine shop. I swept the shop floor and cleaned the machines.

The value of work remains in me to this day. This morning I prepared breakfast. I will clean up the kitchen. I love to clean the kitchen. Every day I sweep and clean Scampy's linoleum floor. Love to do that too.

Preparing nice looking eggs is a goal of mine

Loving life

Being a street person
I've been living in an RV for since February 2003. Except for the two years after my big accident in 2014, that would be 15 years, on-the-road!

I love this life. Moving around as I do is something that I've enjoyed from the very first day. It's a challenge for me, and I seem to be particularly suited for this life.

It's not that I cannot afford to live in an apartment or RV park. Twayler my 29-foot trailer waits for me at Lone Wolf Colony RV Park in Apple Valley, California.  It's just that I love this vagabonding life.

No RV parking
Here in San Diego, after the downturn of 2007 hit, the city passed regulations forbidding RV parking on the street. Residents are not inclined to share their neighborhood with street people.

Where are the people who are sliding down the economic ladder going to live when the giant economic reversal hits? And how will the City of San Diego handle many more 1000s of RVs and homeless coming here?

Sunday chores

Our Nite Camp location was on Clairmont Mesa. Nice quiet Nite Camp.

This morning, the Scampy Team is heading to downtown San Diego to U-Haul where our propane tank will be filled. The tank went empty late Friday afternoon. Since we have two propane tanks now, going empty is no longer a terrible event.

Solar Power and Clouds

We have encountered the longest period of cloudy/rainy weather since arriving in the San Diego a few months ago. This weather is a challenge for our solar power system.

Checking the meter on our solar charging device this morning, the meter read 12.8 volts at 8am. Just now the meter reads 12.3 volts.

We will not know how the battery will do until we get into the nite time. Our inverter sounds an alarm when incoming 12-volt power gets too low. If that alarm sounds early in the evening, we may have to resort to using our Honda generator.

Rose Marie Starns Park

This morning we are heading out from our Coronado Island Nite Camp. The Rose Marie Starns Park has a dump station with fresh water. Scampy needs her fresh water tank filled. The park is near. Only 11 north of Coronado Island.

Our Coronado Island Nite Camp was pleasant. On a quiet street with very little traffic. The Scampy Team is a bit spoiled. We like to sleep where it is peaceful and quiet.

The park is close to Pacific Beach where Slomo skates on the beach walk. Maybe we will hang out there and watch Slomo!

Loving What I Am Doing

When I viewed the Slomo video, it came to me that I was not actively enjoying what I do! When I saw Slomo's face and his smile, I realized that often, my face was not a smiling face.

Could it be that I was falling thru my days? Am I be taking my life for granted?

I determined that I would end being like that forever more! I would live in the moment. And I would make living in the now of time, my way!

The Man Who Skated Right Off the Grid

Dr. John Kitchin quit a medical career to pursue his passion: skating along the boardwalk of San Diego's Pacific Beach. He calls himself "Slomo."

My friend John Porter sent me this email:
"Slomo (his nickname for his unique skating style) is the coolest guy I've ever met.  He hangs out at Mission Beach in San Diego, and I've seen him there for maybe 15 years on my biking visits to the beach.

I first thought he was just another schizo who frequents the boardwalk.  Then I talked to him - and found a very thoughtful and articulate guy.

This video of him explains a lot and has some kernels of wisdom for us all.

It's about 15 minutes long, but may be worth your time. He's one of life's little gifts."

Self-Realization Fellowship

Last Nite the Scampy Team Camped in the City of Encinitas. We are close to the Self-Realization Fellowship founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. We will be going to visit SRF today.

The garden of SRF is so very gorgeous. You may have read my Blog posts about my prior visits there. The SRF garden has a view from high over the Pacific Ocean. Water streams and falls in the garden give the visitor a sense of peacefulness and serenity.

My Blog Posts

I would like make a Blog post to you every single day. With that said, however, I often find that I lack something new to Blog to you.

Please know that I continue to live my vagabonding life. Making each Nite Camp in a different location so as not to be a discomfort to my neighbors.

Maintaining Scampy and Señor Tránsito in good condition. A little maintenance each day works well.

Studying history is a passion which gives me great comfort.

I used to love to prepare meals for myself. However, in recent years my appetite has decreased so much, that I now am satisfied with snacks. A carrot. Some nuts. Cereal with milk. Occasionally a breakfast of matzoh and eggs. Not too often, a Belgian waffle. No more bacon or sausage.

Every other day I go to 24 Hour Fitness.

Playing with Baby Boid.

Missing glasses

Found My Eyeglasses

The Scampy Team is at the dump station at the South Shores Boat Launch Ramp. After dumping both black and grey water tanks and filling the fresh water tank, I was returning the hoses to their place in Tránsito's storage area.

My luggage bag was a little out of place. When I went to move the bag, I saw my eyeglasses sticking out from under the bag. At first, I thought the these were my replacement eyeglasses. Reaching into my pocket, I found the replacement glasses.

The glasses that were under the bag are the lost glasses. Now I have two pairs of prescription eyeglasses!

Lost now found!

Street camping

Santee Lakes

My friend Pete Olson sent an email asking about Santee Lakes. Would I live at Santee Lakes again? Probably not.

I am now living on the streets for free.

When I was living at Santee Lakes I figured that I would be dead now. No need to be conservative with cash.

But then in 2014, I had that big accident with MsTioga, and the doctors fixed my bad heart. Now I am so healthy!

Who knew?!
