AT&T Incident

9:35 am:
Late yesterday afternoon I was up on the mountain, about 1/2 mile from the campground. This location is the only site where an AT&T signal came thru. I was involved with publishing my Blog. Suddenly, a notice from AT&T flashed on to my computer’s screen.

The AT&T notice stated:
"I had used all of my data. If I wished, I could buy more data."

Right away, I phoned AT&T. I wished to buy more data. A robotic machine answered my phone call. Not a human being. A machine.

I did not want to deal with a machine. I told the machine that I wanted a human. But the machine apparently was not programmed for a customer requesting to speak to a human being.

The robot hung up on me because I was not able to respond to its instructions in a certain amount of time.

9:54 am:
The Last Straw For Me!
This is the last straw, I said to myself. I will no longer do business with a company that will not provide me with a phone number which will be answered by a human being.

NO MORE MACHINES FOR ME!

12:04 pm:
Scampy's Screen Door
I had a hell of a time removing Scampy's screen door for shipment back to the factory for repair.

Instead of screws holding the frame to the walls as the manufacturer directs, Scamp Trailer used rivets which had to be drilled out!

I am heading to the UPS store in Powell Wyoming for packing and shipping to the factory.

3:50 pm:
City Park
The Scampy Team has made an Afternoon Camp in the City of Powell Wyoming. It's not too warm. Maybe mid-80s.

We went to the UPS store here in town to send our screen door out for repair. It's gonna cost $75 shipping one-way. I guess $150 both ways!

We want to learn what a brand new door costs in order to make the decision to fix or buy.

In Powell Wyoming.

7:36 pm:
Clark Wyoming
We have made our Nite Camp in the Tiny Town of Clark Wyoming [Link]. The Scampy Team has stopped right over the fast-moving Littlerock Creek.

Littlerock Creek, Clark Wyoming

  1. Why don't you go back to Verizon? I've had them for years and I get service where others can't i.e. AT&T, Sprint, Tmobile, etc. Service is sometimes robotic but you can request to speak to customer service and a human will answer.

    1. Hi Rita,

Because Verizon kept charging me for their service after I had left them for cause. And, they continued charging after I contacted them and let them know what they were doing.

I refused to pay Verizon for three months service that they just made up. In the industry, Verizon is infamous for deliberate over-billing.

T-Mobile seems honest to me. I am with them now.

  2. George, you must have gotten a live person to speak with when you first signed up with AT&T. Otherwise, you would not have signed up with them. You have made your rule clear in the past that you will not be doing business with companies which provide you with automation for doing business. I also feel that these things are a pain in the neck. However, the noose is closing on us. Almost 100 percent of the companies which offer a quality service or product are now using some form of phone automation. My choices are becoming clear; I either go with the younger crowd (who does not mind the automation) or I simply do without the quality service or product. Interaction with my doctor's medical team has now become through phone automation; should I not learn how to interface with his team's method for gathering medical information on me or should I get rid of my doctor I have used for the last 30 years?

    1. Hi Rob,

There are companies that will treat me with respect. Those are the companies that I will use.

    2. I doubt you'll find a phone company that will. They are too big.

  4. Usually if you depress "0" it will transfer to a human.

    1. Bill, I've tried the depress "0" method; either one of two things happen, 1) I get a "warm body" to answer, generally during a low calling period or 2) after about 10 minutes of "elevator" music, I get re-routed back to the main menu, generally during a high calling period. It's a crap shoot! So, if the product or service is very important to me, I now listen carefully and learn how to work the system and thus, use up less of my time. I'm an example that you can teach old dogs new tricks!

    1. Hi Ed,

      1. Why am I in luck?
      2. My Scamp was built in July 2015. Is that lucky?
      3. Do I have the old or new style?
      4. The screendoor that I do have is anything but durable and is manufactured by Plisse Screen Click [Here] to go to their site.

    1. Hi Ed,

Yes, I paid Verizon for everything due them.

BUT, Verizon wanted me to pay for three months when I was not their customer and was with T-Mobile.

In my opinion, Verizon is an outlaw outfit. Others think the same.

  9. Robots make sense to do the grunt work. We don't want humans sitting inside rotting away, we want them outside like you searching for adventure. I've used Verizon for years but personally don't want to talk to humans if I can pull it off on a computer...

    1. Hi AC,

Robots are wonderful for corporations. For example, go to the grocery and when you pay using self-checkout, there is one clerk handling 6-8 registers. Does the grocery share the savings with workers? No!
